About Kalymnos
A Unique Greek Island Experience
Welcome to Kalymnos, the island of sea, stone, and soul. Nestled in the Dodecanese, Kalymnos is world-renowned for its sponge diving tradition, majestic climbing spots, and authentic Greek charm.
A Glimpse of History
Kalymnos has a rich and layered past shaped by the sea and foreign influences. In ancient times, it was part of the Doric Hexapolis, and later passed through the hands of the Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians—each leaving their unique mark on the island’s culture and architecture.
The island became especially famous in the 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to its fearless sponge divers, who traveled as far as North Africa, bringing prosperity and global recognition to Kalymnos. Their legacy lives on today through museums, monuments, and local craftsmanship.
You can still feel this history walking through the Castle of Chrysocheria, exploring the Nautical and Folklore Museum, or visiting one of the traditional sponge workshops in Pothia.
